Istanbul tourist map

Istanbul (Turkey: Istanbul), historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople  (see the names of Istanbul for more information) is the largest city in Turkey. According to the light system register addresses based on the Turkish Statistics Institute, the Metropolitan Municipality (province) of the city had a population of 13.26 million from 2010,  which is 17 98% of the population of Turkey and the third largest in Europe (including Asian part), after London and Moscow. Data from the last 2000 census puts its population at 8.8 million . Istanbul is a megacity, as well as cultural, economic and financial Turkey. It is located on the Bosphorus strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest. It extends both on the European Union (Thrace) and Asia (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and that is the only city in the world that lies on two continents. Istanbul is a city designated alpha world.

During its long history, Istanbul has been the capital of the Roman Empire (330-395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395-1204 and 1261-1453), the Latin Empire (1204-1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). When the Republic of Turkey was proclaimed on October 29, 1923, Ankara, who had previously served as the headquarters of the Turkish national movement during the Turkish War of Independence, was chosen as capital of the new Turkish state. Istanbul was chosen as European Capital of Culture together for the 2010 and the European Capital of Sport for 2012. Istanbul is currently bidding to host the 2020 Olympics.  The city’s historic areas were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 .

The city covers 39 districts of the province of Istanbul.
